To increase the interest and art of crook making, these gentlemen and many other members ‘toured’ the country showing their sticks, giving demonstrations and introducing Novice sections at local agricultural shows while recruiting new members for the Association.
They contacted education Committee at Lockerbie Academy and evening classes were established as further education, with David Grant as the Tutor.
The first classes started in October 1957 throughout the winter and finished in March the following year. To date there are still evening classes held at Lockerbie Academy together with many other areas around Scotland and are still increasing in popularity.
The association has gone from strength to strength and sponsors more than 12 different shows for Novice classes and currently has just over 300 members in Scotland and worldwide. There are 3 ‘touring cups’ , the Duncan Brown Memorial Trophy for Most points in Open section, the George Battison Novice cup for the Best stick in Novice Classes and the Cartner cup for Best Stick in evening classes, all of which are allocated to a different show each year.
